We were at the Mall del Rio in Cuenca and we decided to go for hot chocolate at La Español Cafe.
I saw on the menu: Hot Chocolate With Mozzarella Cheese.
“That’s weird…” I thought. “Why would hot chocolate come with mozzarella cheese on the side ?”
I thought it sounded interesting so I bought it. You can’t imagine the surprise I got!
When it came, I didn’t see any mozzarella cheese. I was starting to wonder where it was. I always eat my hot chocolate with a spoon because its so hot. Well, guess what came up with the spoon…
Hot Chocolate With Mozzarella Cheese
“Oh” I said, “there’s the mozzarella cheese!”
That’s right! It was in the hot chocolate. I was sooo surprised! I never knew that existed. But it was really good. Very gooey and stretchy. And being a lover of cheese, I loved it!
I always like trying new things, but I never thought that this would be something I would try!
Well, I hope you will try this too. Check out my other favorite Ecuador Treats: Salchipapas and Plantain Chips.
Happy travels, and treats!

Hey Drew!
That totally sounds like something I would try! Never even thought of that combo before.
Thanks for the tip!
We had this treat in Quito, where it originated, as far as we were told. The salty taste with the chocolate is surprisingly good!
I guess if done correctly, chocolate goes with almost anything……cheese too.
We had these when we visited our kids & grandkids in June – quite good & very cheap. Everything is served with mayo & the whole family likes mayonnaise.
My 13 year old grandson ordered it when we went out.
I was talking about the Salchipapas!
Hi Drew. That sounds odd but some times some of the most unlikely combo’s taste the best. When I was a kid I liked apple, chipe and a chocolate bar together. Why don’t you give that a try. When I come to see you we can go out and try the chocolate and cheese together.Lets make that a date.
Keep up the good work
Nanny
It was definitely an interesting read, but, I just don’t know if that’s for me. Dark chocolate and salt goes well, ie: choc.covered pretzels, peanuts, etc., but mozza? Did you eat all the cheese? I have eaten choc. ice cream w/cheesies and liked it.
Keep sharing your new adventures. It’s fun.
PS: Thanks so much for the decadent Ecuadorian chocolate!!
Drew
Since I never say a chocolate or a cheese that I did not like, I expect I would like this but is sure sounds strange to me.
I enjoy your short, to the point stories, such a difference from the offten very long blogs from the adult bloggers I read.
Drew,
Matt like to tease me about some of the ‘odd’ combinations we Haines’ enjoy eating. I think the hot chocolate and mozzarella can probably be added to the list quite nicely. Maybe I should make him some and find out!
Sarah
LOL, my parents are Ecuadorian and I’ve had this many times, I love it! I’ve also had coffee with cheese inside, also very YUMMY!
